Have questions about plant-based water bottles? We're here to help!
- Why are you doing this?
The world is full of plastic - some of it can be easily replaced and some of it can not. With our water bottles we have found a bio-plastic that looks and feels exactly like a traditional plastic but it is made with plants. - How do you make plastic from plants ?
Our bio-plastic is derived from sugarcane. After nearly all of the food material has been removed from the cane, the stalks are squeezed and the extract is distilled into ethanol. The ethanol is dehydrated into ethylene which is polymerized to make polyethylene (plastic). It's just science folks. - Do the bottles have a funny sugary taste?
Not all at! No funny taste. No sugar in your water (unless you add it). - Are the bottles durable?
Yes. At the end of the day, our bio-plastic mimics the qualities of a traditional LDPE. If we didn't tell you that our bottles are made from plants, you probably wouldn't be able to tell. - Can I recycle your bottles?
Yep, sure can! Our bottles are made with what's called a "drop-in" bioplastic, meaning that they fit right into the normal recycling stream. It is a #4 LDPE. - If the plastic is essentially the same, what are the sustainability benefits of your bottles?
Great question! The bio-plastic in our bottles is certified carbon negative (cradle-to-gate, which is a type of carbon accounting, if you want to get in the weeds). This means that the carbon absorbed by the sugarcane during the growing process is greater the carbon cost of making the bio-plastic.
